Meet Dr. Maria
Dr. Maria Rutherford is a lifelong educator with over 40 years of teaching experience spanning from infant through grade 12. Her diverse roles include special education teacher, reading and writing specialist, curriculum and instruction specialist, Childcare Director, Elementary Principal and Early Childhood Education Professor.

Dr. Maria is particularly passionate about integrating therapy and service dogs into the learning process and believes in the power of play as a vital educational tool. At The Learning Ark, Dr. Maria has created a nurturing space designed for families, teachers and children to grow and flourish as they reach their greatest potential.
Meet Shiloh
Shiloh is Dr. Maria’s personal service dog, known for his gentle demeanor and playful spirit. He thrives on interactions with children, offering unwavering support and companionship. Shiloh’s presence provides comfort to those who may feel anxious or overwhelmed, creating a safe and inviting environment for learning and growth.
Meet Rhema
Rhema, another dedicated service dog, brings his own unique charm to the Learning Ark community. He delights in being part of everyone’s lives, spreading joy and positivity wherever she goes. Rhema’s friendly nature encourages connection, helping children and families feel welcome and included. Rhema takes part in most all of the Learning Ark activities, workshops, coaching and offerings.

Shiloh and Rhema are more than just service dogs; they are beloved members of The Learning Ark community. Together, they become the book characters with Dr. Maria to promote social emotional learning in children. Shiloh and Rhema inspire families, teachers, and children to dream big and pursue their goals. Their loving personalities contribute to a nurturing atmosphere that fosters learning, resilience, and community spirit at The Learning Ark.
